Fabulous Food Truck Frenzy Friday

Lenexa Civic Center Groundbreaking & Food Truck FrenzyYesterday’s Food Truck Frenzy Friday and Civic Center Groundbreaking event in Lenexa City Center was a huge success!

When we first arrived, there was already a huge gathering of people under the main tent to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Lenexa Civic Center Project.  At 4:30 Todd Pelham, Deputy City Adminstrator, kicked off the conversation by sharing a few details about the Lenexa Civic Center, the project plans, and the people collaborating for the project.  Then several other speakers including Mayor Michael Boehm took the podium to share their vision for the project and what to expect in the coming months/years (expected completion date is Mid-2017).  The actual groundbreaking activity took place at the very end with elected Lenexa officials, project partners, and a few children from Lenexa using ceremonials shovels to move the first few piles of dirt.

Immediately after the groundbreaking festivities, the line of 12 food trucks opened for dinner.  Attendance grew rapidly as families, groups, business professionals, and other Lenexa-ians arrived.  More than 5,000 people (check out this aerial pic) attended, and by 6:00pm the lines for each truck were longer than lines you see at stores on Black Friday.

We had a chance to photograph each of the food trucks before the masses arrived, and even lucked out by snatching up goodies from 5 of the 12 trucks before menu items started selling out and line wait times exceeded 30 minutes.

Here are the food trucks that participated:

Our favorite eats were the Bourbon-Pecan Pulled Pork Sandwich from Wilma’s Real Good Food and the Strawberry Homemade Ice Cream Sammies from Sweet Caroline’s Ice Box.  Curious to find out what other delectable delights were being served up?   Check out this list/map from the event.

Many other Lenexa City Center businesses also participated including WaterCrest at City Center, The Domain, Massage Heights, Hyatt Place, and Saints Pub + Patio.  Most of them offered up details about their business, specials & deals, and contests except for Saints.  They kept the crowd happy by serving up alcoholic beverages :)

Did you attend the event? Or did you miss the fun & excitement?  Well the next Food Truck Frenzy Friday Event in Lenexa City Center is already scheduled for Friday, September 25th.  This one’s set for lunchtime: 11am to 1:30pm.
